Joseph Cornell Box Inspired Art Piece (Thumbnail Sketches)

Joseph Cornell Box Inspired Art Piece (Proposal #2)

Theme Two Topic

Nature and the animals within it.

What will you express through your art?

I will express the beauty of nature and show the details, intricacy, and depth of a certain animal in my piece.  I will express all the things we don't notice about an animal and all the minor pieces in my box.

How will you accomplish this in your piece?

I will accomplish this by creating a very detailed, zoomed-in picture of the particular animal in my piece.  I will clearly show all the crucial aspects I want to demonstrate in my artwork.  I will do so by using lighting to direct the viewer's eye to key places in my masterpiece.  I will try to darken the background and make the foreground seem out of focus so that the viewer wants to concentrate on the actual animal.

Resources Needed:

The resources I will need for my piece are pencil crayons, paint, construction paper, fishing wire, tape and newspaper.

Joseph Cornell Inspired Box Art Piece (Proposal #1)

Theme One Topic:

Winter Scene

What will you express through your art?

I will express the beauty, danger, isolation, and vastness of a mountain in the winter.  I will also show a still shot of a skier isolated that is skiing down bright, fresh snow; showing the beauty of nature, even in a season that most people don't enjoy.

How will you accomplish this in your piece?

I will accomplish this by painting in a  mountain background.  I will place the skier in on a different level, further forward and use real twigs and small branches to create trees along the sides of the box.  I will also use flecks of paper to simulate snow in my piece.  I will also use lighting and painting techniques to show emphasis on different parts of my piece and to show different beauties of nature.

Resources Needed

The resources needed for my pice are paint, a paintbrush, pine tree branches, paper, scissors, string, small battery lights, construction paper, glue, and a box for my piece.

Assignment 1 Questions

1. Write a minimum of a paragraph explaining your interpretation of the music and lyrics.  Explain how you used certain elements or principles of design to describe the selected piece of music.

To describe the music, I used used different brush techniques and different brush strokes.  For example, when listening to the music I thought that it was very slow, clam, steady, original, and interesting.  I tried to make my brush strokes give off the same feel.  I wanted each individual brush stroke to be shown because I think that symbolizes the slow, calm, steady, and interesting part of the song.  The image created in the painting is the way I portrayed the "different" aspect of the painting.  The image is very complex and just by glancing at it one would not understand the meaning of the design, I think that this made it different.  In general, to transfer the music and beat to the painting I took time to analyze it and then brainstorm ways I could transfer the feelings I got from analyzing the music to the painting.

When transferring the lyrics onto the painting the translations were much more literal.  For example, the phrase "wavin' flag" is repeated multiple times, so I used the flags to represent the two land masses in my painting.  I also used quotes like "not far away" from the song and showed them in my image by making the North America side and the Africa side very close in proximity.  Some key themes from the song, like poverty and struggle are also shown in my piece through the collage.

2. What discoveries or techniques did you find helpful through the process?

I found that incorporating a collage into the painting was very helpful for getting detail into smaller spaces.  I could get more images into my painting with the collage than I would have by only painting.  Also, even though I didn't use it, the matte medium technique of moving the paint to the dried matte medium was very innovative and very interesting, it took the collage aspect to the next level.  The last technique I really liked was incorporating the sides of the board into the master piece.  I think it gave the assignment a 3-D effect and provided more opportunities to explore with painting and designs.

3. What are two skills that you learnt and what is one that you feel you worked on to improve your skills?

While working on this project I learnt dry brushing and using matte medium to transfer ink from the paper to dry layers of matte medium.  During the process of creating my painting I also improved my skills of mixing colors.  Before this project I didn't really spend much time on mixing color or care too much about it, but because of this project I improved my skills and realized that I had to be more exact when mixing colors.

Music and Lyrics

Wavin' Flag - K'naan

When I get older I will be stronger
They'll call me freedom, just like a wavin' flag

When I get older, I will be stronger
They'll call me freedom just like a wavin' flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back, oh

Born to a throne, stronger than Rome
A violent prone, poor people zone
But it's my home, all I have known
Where I got grown, streets we would roam

Out of the darkness, I came the farthest
Among the hardest survival
Learn from these streets, it can be bleak
Accept no defeat, surrender, retreat

So we struggling, fighting to eat
And we wondering when we'll be free
So we patiently wait for that fateful day
It's not far away, but for now we say

When I get older I will be stronger
They'll call me freedom just like a wavin' flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back, oh

So many wars, settling scores
Bringing us promises, leaving us poor
I heard them say 'love is the way'
'Love is the answer,' that's what they say

But look how they treat us, make us believers
We fight their battles, then they deceive us
Try to control us, they couldn't hold us
'Cause we just move forward like Buffalo Soldiers

But we struggling, fighting to eat
And we wondering, when we'll be free
So we patiently wait for that faithful day
It's not far away but for now we say

When I get older I will be stronger
They'll call me freedom just like a wavin' flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back, and then is goes

When I get older I will be stronger
They'll call me freedom just like a wavin' flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back, and then it goes
And then it goes

And everybody will be singing it
And you and I will be singing it
And we all will be singing it

When I get older I will be stronger
They'll call me freedom just like a wavin' flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back, and then it goes

When I get older I will be stronger
They'll call me freedom just like a wavin' flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back, oh

When I get older, when I get older
I will be stronger just like a wavin' flag
Just like a wavin' flag, just like a wavin' flag
Flag, flag, just like a wavin' flag
